A Difficult Start Leaves Electric Fans Expectantly Disappointed
Have the Colorado Buffaloes lost their spark?
The Colorado Buffaloes came up short in Friday night's game against the Horned Frogs of TCU for their opening game at Folsom Feild. So why was Colorado’s student section of over 11,000 the only line of defense?
After suffering a delayed kick-off due to a lightning storm in the area by 45 minutes the Buffs had a slow start scoring only a field goal in the first quarter. Returning a punt, the Frogs scored the first touchdown of the game in the second quarter leading seven to six at the half.
After returning to the field the Frogs proceeded to give up 3 touchdowns and a field goal. The Buffs weren’t able to find their grounding both on the offensive and defensive ends while rotating a few of their starts. By the fourth quarter, Colorado was able to make their first touchdown with two minutes left in the game, when the stands had already cleared. Leaving the final score 38-13.
The game itself left fans scratching their heads disappointed because let's be real here, no one if any has had high expectations for this team. After losing 19 assets from their roster to the transfer portal, the team has yet to find someone to step up as a leader.
Sophomore Brenden Lewis started as quarterback for the Buffs and struggled to make plays for most of his playing time. While he did have some great runs, leading the team with 42 yards, he struggled to find his footing when it came to throwing the ball (a similar problem he had last season). By the end of the third quarter after being rotated in for Tennessee transfer J. T. Shrout.
Shrout came up with a few clutch plays for his first appearance in a Colorado uniform however the two quarterbacks ended up completing 13 passes each. This prompts a tough decision for Coach Karl Dorrell as he finalizes who will be the starting QB for the remainder of the season.
On the defensive end, the Buffs struggled to force any errors and this ended up hurting them significantly. They paid the price after giving up third down after third down which gave the Frogs too big of a lead.
So after this preview of what to do this season, it's safe to say that the bar has been set low. However as the saying goes, “win or lose, the buffs will booze.”
Some final thoughts for you readers. As we continue having high hopes for this program, constantly praising the 1990 championship team. I ask, can it be done again in this decade? With such a competitive and evolving recruitment pool, a inconsistent coaching staff, and an undying fan base, I ask this. Can lightning strike twice in Folsom Field?
